Road Stories – Fifth Installment
I was working at a club a fairly long time ago ( I think in Colorado ). Although I don’t remember a lot of the details of this show, I remember it was a good night with a lot of fun volunteers. I had the right number of volunteers and enough time so I decided to do my hypnotic version of the Newlywed Game. The way it works is, I pair off the volunteers into 3 or 4 couples (depending on how many people I have to work with), then I play the game show host as the couples play for the “Grand Prize, chosen especially for them”. It’s a long bit that can take as much as 20 – 30 minutes. The bit was a big success and it was a great way to end the show.
About a year later I was back in the same town at the same club. Just having finished the show a couple came up to me…
Couple: Do you remember us?
Me: I’m embarrassed because I’m sure I should recognize y’all, but I’m drawing a blank.
Couple (Each going back and forth): We were on stage with you about a year ago. We didn’t know each other and we were both on dates. Then you did the Newlywed Game and you paired us off as one of the married couples. We really hit it off on stage and when the show was over we both ditched our dates. We met for a drink after getting rid of our dates and had a great time that night. Anyway, we started dating and things got serious. We wanted to come here tonight to tell you we just got married. If you hadn’t made us one of the couples on the Newlywed Game that would have never happened.
Me (pretty stunned): Thank you so much for coming back to tell me about your marriage. It sounds like things are great. If they continue to stay great I am more than happy to take some of the credit.
Couple (laughing): Don’t worry, things are great and you definitely deserve credit.
Shortly after that they said goodbye and headed out. I thanked them again and wished them well, but a thought crossed my mind; if things don’t work out I hope they know I had nothing to do with it. Bwahahahahahahaha
